Customer Location: Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY
After several years of successful operation in the Collider Accelerator Department Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS), the customer decided to upgrade their capabilities by adding a second Cryomagnetics’ magnet system. This time, both 5T magnet systems are required to be operated together with only 20 cm space between them.
In addition to building a new system, the existing 5T’s dewar had to be replaced with one that could handle the forces between the two magnets. Both systems are recondensing. Each contain a 2.3-meter length coil with a long homogeneous region (+ 0.5% over + 750 mm), have a large 215 mm warm bore, and must maintain strict magnetic field alignment (< 1mm) to the warm bore while both systems are operating simultaneously.
